Question:
Our dev team tested the case where an ACH outbound debit payment is returned in the sandbox environment.
In this testing, the direction of the return payment was inbound; however the originator and receiver are the same as those of the ACH debit outbound payment we originally created.
Even though the ACH return payment is created as a different direction, the originator and receiver seem to keep the value of the original payment. Is this correct?
(*We used the payments / simulated-inbound-returns API for the return.)
Answer:
Yes. In this case the originator and receiver remain the same. The routing number however, will change, because the RDFI is sending it back, which means they are originating a return back to you.
